How to Stop Drinking Soda For Good

Remember when you were a kid and how nothing tasted better than the sweet bubbly taste of soda? Remember how bummed you got when your parents would only let you have one can, or one glass per day? Your parents weren’t just concerned about preventing you from getting all hopped up on sugar, they knew that soda wasn’t very good for you, and were trying to do you a favor.

It turns out there are more than a couple of reasons to pinch your pop habit:

  • So much sugar – Sweets, in moderation, are nothing to get too concerned about. But with an average sugar content of anywhere from 40 to 80 grams per can (or bottle), there’s nothing moderate about that. In fact, that’s the equivalent of eating 20 to 40 sugar packets! Too much sugar can lead to serious health conditions like Diabetes and contribute to obesity. Sugar has also been known to cause these 11 negative side effects, including heart disease.
  • Packing on the pounds – According to the Harvard School of Public Health, sugary drinks like soda are a major cause of obesity in the United States. If you’ve fallen off the New Year’s weight loss wagon, or are getting ready for the upcoming beach season, cutting the calories in soda is a great way to get back on track.
  • Sip all day, get decay” – This Wisconsin Dental Association slogan isn’t kidding. When you drink soda, the sugar combines with bacteria in your mouth to form an acid that erodes the enamel in your teeth. Drinking less soda can help prevent sensitive teeth and promote healthy smiles.
  • Soda stones – People who drink one or more sugary beverages per day had a 23 percent higher likelihood of developing kidney stones. If you’ve had kidney stones in the past, you definitely don’t want them again. If you haven’t, take it from CNN, you don’t want them.
  • Messing with your metabolism – As you may know, staying hydrated has a number of positive health benefits, including speeding up your metabolism. Diet sodas, on the other hand, can play havoc with your metabolism. Yet another reason to kick the habit.
  • Brittle bones – If you are at risk of Osteoporosis, there is new evidence to suggest that cola-based sodas can contribute to lower bone densities. The acids and caffeine in colas could be to blame.
